Saints Lawrence and Marina

Accademia Gallery, Venice

St. Lawrence is in his usual dalmatic and carries a book as usual, but the artist has left out the other attributes more specific to him – his palm branch, gridiron, and (occasionally) processional cross. Perhaps these were thought unnecessary because of the label above his head.

St. Marina is also labeled. She wears a monk's habit and carries a hand cross. Perhaps the gesture of tugging at her cloak could refer to her years of passing as a male.
